Four months after the tragic car accident that killed their parents, 17-year-old Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev, "DeGrassi: The Next Generation") and her 15-year-old brother, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen, "Everwood"), are still adjusting to their new reality. Elena has always been the star student; beautiful, popular and involved with school and friends, but now she finds herself struggling to hide her grief from the world. Elena and Jeremy are now living with their cool-but-overwhelmed Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning, "Smallville"), who is doing her best to be a surrogate parent.

A new student with a dark secret enrolls at Mystic Woods's high school. Meanwhile, another student named Elena tries to get back to normal after losing her parents.

Vicki slowly recovers from her attack, but faces more problems as she is used as Damon's pawn. Elena gets closer to Stefan during a magical night. Meanwhile Jeremy's struggles at school reaches home.

Stefan joins the football team and finds he is not welcomed by all the players. Later, Elena receives unexpected guest during a dinner party thrown for Stefan and Bonnie.

Elena invites Stefan to the annual Founder's Day party. Zack helps get rid of Damon while Caroline is further controlled.

Stefan traps Damon in a cell in order to prevent him from killing anyone else. Elena searches for the the truth of the Salvatore's past while Bonnie loses control of her powers at a car wash.

Elena learns the truth about Stefan's past. Damon kidnaps Vicki and uses her as his plaything while the town acts to destroy the vampires.

Vicki is brought to the mansion and guided by Stefan on how to surpress her hunger for human blood. Meanwhile, Damon learns about the secret Council formed to battle the vampires.

An old friend of Stefan arrives in town to celebrate his birthday. Meanwhile, Damon gets inside the inner circle of the forces who are trying to destroy the vampires.

Bonnie's body is taken over by Emily. Jeremy meets his new teacher who gives him a second chance at getting good grades. Stefan tells Elena he is quitting school.

Logan returns to Jenna's doorstep. Stefan and Damon learn there is another vampire in town. Elena is sad since Stefan plans to leave town. Tyler and Jeremy realize they have something in common.

Damon and Elena go on a road trip. Bonnie discovers the tomb under the church. Jeremy makes a new friend.

Elena poses as bait to lure out her attacker during the school's dance. Bonnie gets the hots for the bartender. Jeremy discovers the girl who helped him with his paper is stalking him.

Stefan and Damon continue to search for the Grimoire, but realize that someone else is looking for it. The show jumps back in time to reveal how the brother's father was involved in the battle against vampires.

Anna holds Bonnie and Elena hostage in exchange for the Grimoire. Caroline and Matt get serious. Damon and Stefan team up to open the tomb.

Elena searches for her birth mother. Alaric confronts Damon for attacking his wife. Matt's mother returns to town.

Matt, Caroline, Stefan and Elena go out on a double date. Anna hangs out with Jeremy. Pearl goes downtown to start a new business.

Stefan is abducted and tortured by Frederick. Jeremy asks Anna to turn him. Caroline makes a grisly discovery in the woods.

Stefan fights his urges to drink human blood. Jeremy and Elena's uncle John arrive to celebrate the Founder's Day kick off. Matt is disappointed at his mother's behavior at the party.

Elena and Caroline compete for the crown of Miss Mystic Falls. Stefan lies to everyone about his addiction to blood. Bonnie returns and shares her distrust of the vampires.

Elena helps Stefan go through his human blood withdrawals. Alaric and Damon team up to search for Isobel. Stefan shares how he and Damon first turned into vampires.

Isobel returns to town to retrieve Johnathan Gilbert's device. Jeremy has trouble contacting Anna. Elena and Bonnie make up.
