The team arrives at the California/Nevada border to examine a right hand found lying in the middle of the road. The number 43 is written on the palm of the hand. Patrick says that the victim must be left handed because the writing is on his right hand and the number would be bigger if the killer wrote it. Patrick gets down next to the hand and smells it. He determines that the man used an almond oil moisturizer and his nails were well manicured. He believes that the victim is a rich white man who is in upper management at a hotel or casino. Patrick takes bets on whether or not he's right. Grace objects, but Wayne points out that technically they are in Nevada so the bets would be legal. The officers ante up and Teresa returns with the victims identity, a man named James 'Jim' Quincy Meyer who runs a casino in Vegas. Patrick collects his winnings from his teammates.

Grace, Teresa, and Patrick go to the Meyer's home. Patrick talks to the daughter, Jessica, who says that she doesn't have many photos of her father because he wasn't around much. They sit on the couch with Daniel, Jessica's husband, who is more interested in a football game that his father in law's murder. Teresa asks Ann, Jim's wife if the number 43 has any significance. She says no. She tells the detectives that her husband was well liked, but he was principled, which can get someone in trouble in Vegas. Grace asks if robbery could have been a motive. Ann says that he never carried cash, but he wore a $100,000 casino chip around his neck for good luck. She shows the detectives a picture of the chip that they have for insurance purposes.

Wayne tells Teresa that he found several similar murder cases in the area where the mafia would cut the hand off of a victim and leave it for the police to find. Grace, Teresa, and Patrick then go to the casino that Jim worked at and meet with Matt, the head of security. Patrick notices the tricks the casino uses to make people stay longer and bet more money. Patrick sees a man at a high stakes table and asks Matt who he is. Matt says that his name is Cal and he's a serious gambler. Patrick asks Teresa if he borrow a $100 to play a game. She gives it to him, making him promise to double it. He then goes off and tells Teresa and Grace to have Matt show them around. They tell Matt that the mafia will often cut off someone's hand when they get caught stealing and ask if that could have happened to Jim. Matt tells them that the mob no longer owns the casinos in Vegas.

Patrick sits down at a blackjack table and proceeds to win. He asks the dealer to change his chips in for $1000 chips. He then takes his larger value chips and heads to the high stakes table. He introduces himself to the dealer and proceeds to win. Teresa, Grace and Matt are in the security room when Matt gets a call telling him that there is possible cheating at table 43. The three head down and see Patrick's huge pile of winnings. Matt tells Patrick to leave after Patrick explains that he just memorized the cards. Patrick then tells Matt that the dealer was cheating by flashing her cards to the man at the end of the table and dealing the second card off the top to all the others.

The team returns to the headquarters. Patrick discloses that he won $250,000. Cho questions Alexandra, the dealer, about why she was cheating. She tells him that she was just trying to save up enough money to pay for a liver transplant for her mother. Cho asks if anyone else was working with her and she says no. He asks if Jim fired her because he found out she was cheating. She says yes, but maintains that she didn't kill him. She says that she found out he was dead and just acted like she was never fired. Patrick wonders why Jim didn't tell Matt. Patrick sticks his head in the interrogation room and asks if Matt was in on the cheating too. She says no and Patrick tells her she can go.

Teresa is upset that Patrick wants to release Alexandra. Patrick tells her that Matt will find out she was let go and may become nervous that she cooperated with them and told about Matt's role in the cheating. He might then be more likely to confess.

Patrick hands boxes of jewelry to Grace and Teresa. They are impressed, but say they can't accept the gifts. Patrick tells them that he won the money fairly and can spend it however he wants. Cho and Wayne ask if he got them anything. Patrick pauses, then tosses them each an expensive watch. He tells the team he wants to take them all out for a fancy dinner later. Teresa points out that it wouldn't look good if they were seen living it up, so Patrick takes them to a dive bar instead. At the bar, Patrick tells the team that he was able to memorize the cards by assigning them to living things and putting them in his memory palace which is a carnival that his dad used to take him to when he was little. The team doesn't understand his method, but he insists that it works. The ladies take off their jewelery and give it back to Patrick. They thank him, then leave. The guys ask if they can keep their watches and Patrick says of course.

That night, Patrick tosses and turns in his hotel bed. He gets up early, packs up the jewels and cash and gets dressed. He puts the bag of money into a deposit box for a Planet Aid charity. Teresa then calls him and tells him to meet her at Ann's house because she wants to confess something.
