Sam wakes up in a motel and finds Jessica, his girlfriend who died, laying next to him. He thinks he is dreaming, but she assures him he is not. She asks if he is running away. He tells her he wants to be normal, but knows he is a freak. She tells him he can't run from himself and the past will catch up with him. She says when that happens, people are going to die. As Sam starts to tear up, Jessica disappears.

The show jumps back one week earlier. Sam hitches a ride to Garber, Oklahoma. He takes a busboy job at a bar. After he starts, a waitress named Lindsey takes a liking to him.

Meanwhile, Dean goes on a solo hunt in Greely, Pennsylvania. He finds a vampire, says 'eat it Twilight,' then kills it. While driving to the next job, he looks at his passenger side and realizes that he is alone. In a motel, Castiel surprises Dean. He says that Bobby told him where he was and wonders where Sam is. Dean tells him that Sam is traveling by himself. Castiel says he wants to find Raphael, the archangel that killed him, to get information about God. Dean asks him if he is looking for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Angel. Castiel plans on trapping and interrogating Raphael. He tells Dean he needs his help because Raphael would never hurt him since he is Michael's vessel. Dean agrees to assist him. Castiel says that Raphael is in Maine. As Castiel is about to teleport them, Dean stops him and tells him the last time he teleported he didn't poop for a week. He insists they drive.

Meanwhile, Lindsey asks Sam, who is posing as a man named Keith, if he would like to play a game of darts. She tells him the only thing she knows about him is that he is smart. Lindsey bets him dinner if she wins. Sam throws and hits the bullseye with all three of his darts. Behind him, a local television newswoman reports a freak incident where there was hail followed by lightning storms that sparked fires.

Castiel and Dean arrive to Maine. Castiel says a deputy saw Raphael. Castiel details his plan to tell the deputy that he witnessed an angel of the lord then ask him where he is. Dean says they should lie to the policeman to get what they want. He gives him an FBI badge and fixes his tie just before they meet the deputy. The deputy tells them he lost his hearing in one ear after a gas station incident. He says that he responded to a riot between thirty men. Castiel tells Dean that the skirmish was between angels and demons. The deputy asks Dean what Castiel means and Dean explains Castiel thinks people who drink are demons. The deputy says that there was a pure white explosion that leveled the gas station and killed most of the men. Afterwards, he noticed an unhurt mechanic down on his knees. The deputy says that the mechanic is now at St. Pete's mental hospital. They visit the mechanic and find him blankly staring at a wall. Castiel says that the mechanic is now an empty vessel. Dean asks if he can expect to be in the same state that the mechanic is in after Michael takes over his body. Since Michael is much more powerful, Dean can expect to be in a far worse state, Castiel says.
