The night before Halloween, three boys videotape themselves as they play pranks in the neighborhood. They see a neighbor's car taht belongs to Mr. Korby filled with smoke with the stereo on. They notice a house taped to the tailpipe and inserted in the car. Korby falls dead out of the car when they open the door.

The next day, Tony tells the team about a betting pool he enters where his friends try to guess the number of domestic disturbances that occur the night before Halloween. McGee says he remembers calling the night Devil's Night.

Gibbs tells the team they have a dead Marine. Gibbs has Agent Ziva drive to the scene. Mcgee reports the victim is James Korby, who just returned from Afghanistan. Ziva suspects Korby killed himself. Ducky arrives and says it doesn't look like Korby died from carbon monoxide poisoning. The kids from the neighborhood state that Korby was the king of practical jokes. Mr. Rodgers arrives and says Korby always played pranks on him.

Ducky discovers that Korby is frigidly cold. Tony and Ziva enter the garage and see that it is a mess. Tony suspects Korby was murdered since his computer monitor is broken.

Palmer hears a noise from the Korby's body. Ducky wonders why Korby sounds brittle. He finds a frozen piece of flesh in his mouth and figures he was killed by forced ingestion of liquid nitrogen.

In the lab, McGee tells Tony that Korby was busted for dereliction of duty. He reports that Korby had a wife named Sara Korby. Tony says there is no way that Korby committed suicide since Sara is too attractive. They find that Sara spent a night in a hotel after Korby came home from Afghanistan. Sara arrives at the headquarters with her daughter. She tells Tony that she had a deal with her husband in which she spent every Halloween at a spa while he did projects at home. Her daughter Rachael says she is both Korby and Sara's stepdaughter. She explains that Korby became her step dad when he married her mom, then her mom died when she was young. Sara says she married Korby later. She says she was at a party when Korby died.

Ducky confirms Korby died by ingestion of liquid nitrogen. Palmer demonstrates to Gibbs the effects of liquid nitrogen on a pumpkin. They explain that the ingestion of liquid nitrogen suffocated his lungs. Ducky suspects Korby was force fed a single gulp of the liquid.

McGee shows Ziva the video the kids took the night that Korby died. McGee admires the kids technique as they toss toilet paper at a tree. Gibbs learns that Korby had several complaints against him made by a neighbor named Mr. Rodgers.

Tony and Ziva knock on Mr. Rodgers's door and he screams there is no candy there. They announce themselves. He explains he works at home as a commodity trader. He says Korby was a pain in the a*** because he would prank him often. Tony tells Rodgers to turn off his light to let the kids know he doesn't have candy. They ask him about the fight he had with Korby the other night and if he killed him. He says he was at an online meeting. Tony says he doesn't trust people who don't give out candy during Halloween. Two kids arrive and Rodgers puts energy drinks in their bags.
