You haven't seen inside a hospital until you've seen it through the eyes of those who know it best: its nurses. Veronica Callahan is one of those nurses. She just returned to Mercy Hospital from a tour in Iraq and knows more about medicine than all of the residents combined. Together with fellow nurses Sonia and Chloe, she navigates the daily traumas and social landmines of life and love both inside the hospital and out in the real world.

Veronica continues to struggle with the horrors she witnessed when she was in Iraq while tending to the needs of her patients at Mercy Hospital. Later, she learns the doctor she had an affair oversees is now joining the hospital. Meanwhile, Chloe, the newest nurse learns that she has to get over the fact that people will die in the hospital.

Veronica treats a young man who unknowingly has his leg amputated. Chloe is taken advantage of by a drug addicted patient who claims he has an untreated disease.

Sonia uses hospital resources to care for her brother who was shot. Veronica and Mike seek spiritual help to restore their marriage.

Veronica oversteps her bounds to take care of a war veteran. During a date, Chloe learns the truth about Sands's time in Iraq.

Veronica faces a disciplinary review over her work with Harris. Meanwhile, Chloe mistakenly shares a secret with Ryan.

Sonia worries about her police officer boyfriend who has gone missing. Veronica debates whether or not she should tell Mike about her affair with Chris. Chloe reunites with an ex-boyfriend in hope of having a quick fling.

Sonia helps a old high school rival who is being abused by her husband. Meanwhile, Veronica learns her father might be suffering from Alzheimer's.

After finding a photo of herself with the word whore on it, Chloe figures someone hates her. Sonia treats a girl who was born genetically a boy. Veronica gets back with Mike after she suspects she is pregnant.

After a slip and fall, the staff wonders if Harris's paralysis is mental. Sonia treats a pregnant woman who changes her mind after deciding to give her baby up for adoption. Chris and Gillian's relationship becomes more serious.

Sonia helps out a child who might have been kidnapped from her real parents. Veronica suspects that Mike is seeing another woman. Chloe struggles to convince an often absent daughter to sign a DNR for her father.

Chris's trouble-making sister arrives with an unexpected package. Sonia realizes that Valentino's line of work bothers her. Chloe treats a terminally ill nearlywed.

Veronica builds up the courage to make a move on Chris. The staff gets a patient who was in a coma up to speed with the recent developments. Chloe is forced to decide between a dying patient's wishes and her husband's need for closure.

Veronica and Chris team up to save a frozen child. A new doctor arrives to take over the ICU ward. Chloe helps a patient get over his grief. James Van Der Beek joins the cast.

The staff makes plans for Valentine's Day. Chris asks Veronica out on a date. Chloe and Angel are sent to the ER.

Veronica is haunted by the ghost of the robber she shot. The hospital receives several victims of a bus bomb. Nick wonders why Sonia didn't come home the night before.

Veronica returns to work after shooting a robber at a donut shop. Joe takes Chloe outside the hospital to take care of a VIP client. Lauren tells Sonia she wants to die.

After St. Patrick's Day, Veronica's family and friends are worried about her destructive behavior. Joe brings in a camera crew to video tape his greatness. Sonia runs into Nick during a street fair.

Veronica picks sides in an argument between Joe and Chris over a patient. Sonia asks Nick to get back with her. A star athelete has the hots for Chloe.

A group of prisoners are treated at the hospital. Veronica receives Mike's divorce papers. Joe is asked to help with an assassination.

Joe is worried about his mob connections as they interfere with his life. Chloe considers telling Andy's coach about his condition. Veronica and Chris's old boss arrives and offers them a job.
