Ned arrives in class to hear Professor Avery give a lecture about communication with the dead. She says in her culture, communication with the dead is taken seriously. After a student asks why she doesn't state whether or not ghosts are real, Avery says what matters are the systems of beliefs.

After class, Ned asks Avery if she would like him be her teacher's aide. He tries gives her a spirit board as a gift, but she is concerned about his intentions. Avery notices a concert flyer on her door for a band called Lethos Trio. She asks her TA, Trey, who put the flyer on her door, but he doesn't know. Trey tries to take down the flyer and throw it in the trash, but it lands on Avery's desk. Ned suggests they use the spirit board to find out who knew she liked the Lethos Trio. While using the spirit board to pose the question whether or not Avery should go to the concert, it flies in the air, lands with the answer yes. Avery tells Ned to leave without the spirit board. Under the board, Avery finds a flower.

Ned tells Melinda, Eli and Jim he wants to be a TA so he can access the faculty library. Eli says the Book of Changes was found in the library within the Copeland wing. Melinda warns Eli that the spirit board can call up any spirit. Eli says Avery has a dead boyfriend. Ned shows them a webpage which is almost a shrine to her ex-fiance Curtis. While walking by, Avery notices Ned looking her page.

Before class, Avery tells Ned he should have boundaries. Avery sees that someone scheduled her to go to the concert. Ned explains she is being haunted and it won't stop until she acknowledges it. She asks Avery to transfer out of her class. She tries to erase the concert off her calendar, but it reappears. She notices the flowers that wilted on her desk are back to life.

The Lethos Trio performs a brooding song at the school. Eli tells Melinda that although Avery teaches the paranormal course, she doesn't believe in it. Eli figures they should help Ned since he is helping them get into the Copeland wing. They watch as Avery's phone flies out of her hand and breaks. A man helps her pick it up before she leaves. Melinda reluctantly asks Eli to set up a meeting with Avery.

Melinda meets with Avery and sees she is skeptical about ghosts. Melinda tells her that she knows about Curtis, her dead fiance. Avery says her friends want her to move on, but she thinks Curtis was her one true love. Melinda suggests she let Curtis go since spirits don't belong on Earth. Avery says she knows a lot about ghosts too.

Later that night, Avery finds a stack of mail piled in front of her door. She discovers her apartment set up for a romantic evening she figures was done by Curtis. She sits down to start a movie, but it says it is a bad disk. Avery figures Curtis wants to communicate through the spirit board. She places both hands on the board and asks Curtis to talk back since she misses him, but nothing happens.
