The Third Man 2.14
- After the detectives find a squatter who discretely moves in while the residents are on vacation, they search for a mysterious third man who is responsible for a string of murders. Beckett and Castle go on separate dates after the paper prints a rumor they are romantically linked. Read the Vitemo recap and review to find out what happened on ABC's Castle.
The Dyson family returns home from a vacation. They realize that someone has been in their apartment while they were away. The father finds a dead body in his daughter's bed.
Meanwhile, Castle is happy that he is in the paper's most eligible bachelor list. Martha reads the blurb that states Castle is romantically linked to Beckett, which surprises them. The girls think that Beckett will be upset at the story. Beckett calls and tells Castle they have a dead body.
Castle arrives at the Dysons' apartment and tries to get a feel if Beckett knows about the list. Beckett tells Castle that the victim slept in all three beds just like Goldilocks. Lanie shows him a syringe injection site in the back of the victim's neck. Ryan finds a camera that shows photos of the apartment. They figure the man wanted to put the place exactly like he left it to avoid the owners from suspecting he used it.
Back at the station, Castle tries to hide the paper from Beckett. They identify the body as Douglass Bishop who was previously charged with a crime of drunk and disorderly that was later dropped. Lanie tells the team that Douglass was injected by a lethal dose of ketamine. Douglass's sister Melanie and her husband Stan arrive and identify the body.
The couple says it doesn't make sense that Douglass stayed at the apartment since he had a place of his own. Melanie says Douglass worked at a travel agency, which makes Castle figure how he knew the home owners were out of town. Melanie and Stan say Douglass was saving money to set up a scuba shop in Jamaica. Melanie says the last time he saw her brother was at a holiday party at the airport where Stan works.
Later, Beckett tells Castle that Douglass didn't miss a day at work before he died, his savings are untouched and the travel agency was different than the one used to book the family's vacation. Ryan recovers deleted photos from Douglass memory card and sees images of different apartments, a silenced pistol and a syringe. The team notices a reflection of a man who is not Douglass. Beckett suspects the man is their killer.
The team wonders why the killer left the camera. Beckett figures if they find out how the squatter knew the home owners, they can find the killer. Castle distracts Beckett as she looks through the paper. Esposito finds a name on one of the prescription bottles photographed by the squatter.
Beckett and Castle meet the owner of the prescription, a woman named Langford, and tell her the squatter went to her house. She says she left on a vacation, came back, and saw that her faucet was fixed, but not by her super. She says she also found a bottle of strawberry champagne in her fridge. Castle suggests the man is a gentleman squatter. Langford tells Castle the picture in the paper doesn't do him justice. She surprises Beckett by asking her if she is the detective girlfriend.
Beckett becomes upset after reading the blurb in the paper. Castle describes the story as shoddy journalism and threatens to cancel the subscription. Castle gets a revelation and calls the paper. He figures someone with vacation hold information knew when residents were away.
Beckett and Castle meet with the subscription manager to get a list of employee names. Castle meets with Donna, the reporter who wrote the bachelor list. Donna says she assumed he had a thing for Beckett since he kept on complimenting her during their interview for the story. Castle insists he is single and she tells him the bachelorette number 3, Amanda Livingston, wants his number.
Beckett finds a match of a delivery boy to the person on one of the photos. She says the employee named Mickey Carlson didn't show up for work that morning. The manager says Mickey never gave him his address, but he comes in to pick up his paycheck like clockwork.
Back at the station, Beckett figures the delivery job is just a front for Mickey's real job. Castle tells Beckett that his friend Donna wrote a blurb about them. Castle says a bacherlorette is interested in him.
Beckett tells Lanie she has no life and needs a date. She asks her to hook her up since she is tired of living a quiet life. Lanie gives her a number for a firefighter named Brad who was featured on a calender.
Castle asks Alexis how her day went. She says her vice-principal and her German teacher want to go on a date with him. Castle figures that his daughter hates him a little.
At the paper, Castle and Beckett see that Mickey hasn't shown up yet. Beckett asks him about a hard-to-get-into restaurant she wants to go to for a date. They spot Mickey, but he runs after Beckett identifies herself. Beckett catches up with him and arrests him.
At the station, Mickey tells the team neither the gun or syringe belongs to him. He insists he was just squatting in apartments. He explains he broke in an apartment that belongs to a family named the Maytlans, took photos, and became concerned after he discovered the pistol, syringe and mountain climbing gear. He says he hid as three men including Douglass, a plain man, and a scar faced man entered the apartment. He says he quickly grabbed his stuff and went into the Dyson apartment. Later, the men burst into the apartment and ordered him to return a phone that he accidentally grabbed from the Maytlan's apartment. Mickey states the plain man wanted to kill him, but Douglass said he didn't sign up for murder. The men argued about a three million dollar payout which gave him an opportunity to escape.
Castle tells Beckett he believes Mickey's story. Ryan gets on the phone to get permission to enter Maytlan's apartment. Ryan states the Maytlans are off on a cruise. Beckett gets a call from Brad who asks her to go on a date. Esposito describes Brad as a heroic good looking man.
The team enters the Maytlan's apartment. Castle is impressed at the layout and the details. Castle is amazed that the Maytlan's converted an old dumb waiter into an entertainment center cabinet. Castle tells Beckett that he knows about her date with the pinup boy. Castle opens the fridge which contains a man who was shot dead. Beckett notices the man has a crescent shaped scar that matches a man that Mickey described.
At the station, Ryan says the dead man was Anton Francis. Ryan says Anton was responsible for a laundry list of crimes. He says Mickey's alibi in which he stayed at a homeless shelter checked out. Castle wonders who the third man was. The team discovers the Maytlan's cruise was set up as a phony contest provided by Douglass's travel agency. They figure it was a scam to get the Maytlan's out of the apartment. They wonder what the men wanted in the apartment. Castle figures the old dumb waiter provided them access to another location below the Maytlan's.
The team learns there is a pet shop under the apartment. They arrive and see that the dumb waiter was open. Dupree, the owner, says there is a bank next door.
Beckett tells Roy that the bank heist never got to the point in which they entered the building. Castle wonders if the third man is one of Douglass's clients. He shares his theory that the man learned about Douglass's dream of owning a scuba shop, then offered him to be part of the heist. Beckett wonders if she should cancel her date, but Roy advises she go and let Ryan and Esposito work overtime for her.
At home, Alexis helps Castle pick out a tie for his date. Alexis says she wants to make sure someone takes care of him after she leaves. Castle tells her it is his job to watch over her, not the other way around. Alexis reminds him of when he tried to deep fry a turkey and burned himself.
