Hodgins shows Bones that a troop of little girls called the Woodchucks brought a dead body in for them to examine. Camille tells Bones she is their role model. Hodgins says the girls found the remains in a river and Bones scolds the girls for interfering with a crime scene. Hodgins says the troop did everything by the book. Bones tells the girls they did good, but says the next time they should leave the scene alone. The girls all boo Bones.

Wendell and Camille examine the remains and find a high level of hydrogen sulfide, which make the remains smell like a fart. Wendell says the victim was a male who was missing fingers. Camille tells Wendell to go with Hodgins to the river to look for the missing body parts. Hodgins and Wendell head out and discuss the possibility that the army was involved in the death during a failed hibernation experiment.

Booth meets with Bones and Angela and gives them information on DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, who are into extreme studies. Bones asks if they are involved in a hydrogen sulfide experiment. Booth asks to see the remains to be able to tell if DARPA is involved. Angela pulls up a computer rendering of the victim and explains that it was half man and half chicken. Booth thinks she is joking, but Bones confirms the findings.

The team discusses the possibility of a chicken soldier. Hodgins says the missing fingers were probably transformed into talons. They find that the victim didn't drown, but did have a lot of scar tissue. Camille says the scars look like injuries from someone snorting various substances. Hodgins takes a look and pulls out a gapeworm, a parasite found in chickens.

Bones talks to Booth about the experiment. Booth wonders why they would use a chicken when a robot would be much better. Booth calls the Defense Department to see if they had a missing soldier who fits the victim's description. Booth then gets a hit on the victim and finds the victim's name is Nick Rabin, the head of personnel at a chicken farm.

Booth and Bones arrive at the chicken farm and see several protesters. Bones suggests that they are protesting the stench. They find out that the chickens are being kept in terrible conditions. Booth and Bones meet Gaynor Rabin, Nick's wife and the accountant at the chicken farm. Booth tells her Nick is dead and sees she is not surprised. Bones tells her they found Nick in the river. Bones asks if Nick wore a breathing apparatus to prevent damage from the hydrogen sulfide in the air. Gaynor says she told Nick to, but he never did. Gaynor says Nick just disappeared and asks what happened. Bones suggests that he was murdered. Gaynor says Nick was next in line to take over the business. She suggests they look into the protesters.

Angela updates Hodgins on her celibacy and he congratulates her for her success. Angela says her six months are almost up, but Hodgins says he will not be the one to break her fast.

Booth and Bones watch the protesters harass the employees. Bones asks the security guard if anyone had a beef with Nick. He points out a protester named Josh Parsons who he says got into a fight with Nick over a damaging video Josh took. Booth and Bones talk to Josh, but he says he didn't kill anyone. The protesters announce there is a code yellow. They then pour buckets of yellow goo and feathers on Booth and Bones. Booth tells them they are all under arrest.
